The Land Rover Series III. A magnificent example of British engineering philosophy, built upon the reassuring principle that if something is sufficiently simple, sufficiently sturdy and sufficiently uncomfortable, it will probably keep working long after more sophisticated machinery has surrendered to the elements. It is a vehicle designed to cross deserts, climb mountains, negotiate flooded tracks and transport sheep across muddy fields, although travelling fifty miles along a motorway without developing temporary deafness may present a greater challenge.

In Land Rover Series III, John Carroll celebrates one of Britain’s most recognisable and enduring four-wheel-drive vehicles, a machine whose combination of practical engineering, agricultural charm and heroic indifference to passenger comfort has earned it generations of devoted admirers.

Introduced in 1971, the Series III represented the next stage in the development of the original Land Rover, a vehicle conceived in the austere years following the Second World War when Britain desperately needed something useful, exportable and preferably capable of being repaired with a hammer.

The Series III retained much of the rugged mechanical simplicity of its predecessors while introducing improvements to its appearance, interior and equipment. The familiar aluminium bodywork, sturdy chassis, selectable four-wheel drive and utilitarian character remained reassuringly intact. Luxury was not entirely absent, although it tended to mean having somewhere reasonably dry to sit and a heater that occasionally produced a measurable quantity of warmth.

Carroll examines the history and character of the Series III, celebrating its many variations and the remarkable versatility that made it indispensable to farmers, soldiers, explorers, utility companies and people who lived in places where conventional motor cars rapidly became expensive garden ornaments.

From short-wheelbase models bouncing enthusiastically across muddy fields to long-wheelbase workhorses carrying equipment, supplies and occasionally an improbable number of passengers, the Series III became a familiar sight across Britain and throughout the world.

Its appeal was never based upon speed, refinement or sophisticated handling. The steering required commitment, the suspension encouraged a philosophical acceptance of discomfort, and the cabin acoustics made ordinary conversation an ambitious undertaking. But what the Land Rover lacked in elegance, it compensated for with durability, practicality and an almost endearing determination to continue functioning.

Produced until 1985, the Series III helped establish the Land Rover’s enduring reputation as a vehicle that could go practically anywhere, provided the driver possessed sufficient mechanical sympathy and wasn’t unduly concerned about arriving with all their fillings intact.

This 2021 Key Publishing edition, offered in As New condition by Crappy Old Books, is an appealing addition to the shelves of Land Rover enthusiasts, classic vehicle collectors, restoration devotees and anyone who regards modern SUVs, with their heated steering wheels and electronically adjustable cup holders, as a regrettable departure from proper motoring.

A splendid tribute to an automotive legend, built for hard work, difficult terrain and a lifetime of adventures.

And proof that a vehicle doesn’t need leather upholstery, satellite navigation or seventeen computers to become a classic.

Sometimes all you need is four-wheel drive, a decent toolbox and the firm conviction that the mysterious rattling noise is probably nothing serious.
